My Dress-Up Darling Plot :
Engrossed in the family business of traditional doll making, Wakana Gojou is a reserved high school freshman without friends. Harboring painful memories of a childhood friend’s disdain toward his interest, Gojou cannot relate to his classmates and their pastimes, eventually isolating himself.
Gojou has yet to perfect his crafting of dolls’ faces but is exceptionally skilled at making their clothes. His finesse with the sewing machine is soon discovered by his beautiful classmate Marin Kitagawa, whose boldness and honesty Gojou both admires and envies. Instantly, she shares with Gojou her own hobby: she likes to cosplay as characters from erotic video games.
However, Kitagawa cannot sew her own costumes, leading her to seek Gojou’s expertise. Now, as he is dragged along to the charming girl’s endless cosplay-related affairs, Kitagawa becomes his first friend who fully accepts him. Is My Dress-Up Darling complete?
As of April 5th, 2022, the My Dress-Up Darling manga has 12 volumes, with the latest volume having been released on March 25th, 2022. Beyond the volumes, up to chapter 74 is available. Anime production doesn’t finish before the show begins to air (you can consult Shirobako if you’d like more insight on the industry). With almost the same amount of chapters available, it should be time for the production to start planning around a Season 2 announcement.
After all, with the show becoming a surprise hit, they’ll want to capitalize on its popularity as much as possible, and a Season 2 announcement would give fans something to look forward to. If you look at Kaguya-sama: Love Is War as an example of what a successful, annual romantic comedy looks like (without the interruption of the onset of a global pandemic), there’s hope that we might see My Dress-Up Darling Season 2 by Spring 2023 at least. That’s just speculation, but there’s enough manga material to make it happen.

How old is My Dress-Up Darling?
How old is My Dress-Up Darling’s Marin? When the anime series begins, Marin is 15 years old. Her birthday is on March 5th. That makes her just a couple of weeks older than Gojou, as he is also 15 years old, but with a birthday on March 21st
Marin is also two years younger than Juju, although she looks a lot older but older than Juju’s sister Shinju. Although we never actually learn exactly how old Shinju is, just that she’s in middle school.
As for if Marin looks older than she is, no, not really.
Not when you see her wearing a sweatshirt and a t-shirt while watching a movie, or when wearing her school uniform, she looks like she’s 15 years old.
It is only when she cosplays, or when she is in full make-up for fashion shoots she sometimes does as an amateur model, she looks like she is 18 or 19 years old.
Overall, though, both Marin and Gojou look their age. Except for very very pretty versions of their age, eh?

Will Kitagawa and Gojo get together?
Something that we all waited for since the start of My Dress-up Darling has finally happened in the last episode. Marin Kitagawa finally confesses to Gojo Wakana with all her heart. However, Gojo was unable to hear the confession from Kitagawa Marin because he fell asleep during the call.
Weekends were really something to look forward to while My Dress-up Darling was airing and now after the 12th episode run the series finally concludes its season one. The ending of season 1 was really great and wholesome, there was so much to the episode.
Episode 12 of My Dress-up Darling started with Gojo sharpening his Hina doll creation skills. Later, Kitagawa called him to help her with the summer Holidays homework, so Gojo went to her house and aided her in finishing the English homework. After finishing the study work they went to their school to get Kitagawa’s Maths drills that she left during their school days.
Near the school’s swimming pool, Kitagawa Marin asked Gojo if he wants to join her in near festivals to which Gojo agreed happily. Later on, they both went to the festival near Gojo’s house and had a lot of fun together. It was so much wholesome moment during the fireworks and the animators did justice to the scene.
Episode 12 ended on Kitagawa and Gojo’s way back home. But there was an added extra scene in the end which took place on their last day of summary Holliday.
In the added scene, Kitagawa called Gojo because she was scared while watching a Horror movie. They talked till midnight and when Gojo was falling asleep Kitagawa confessed to him saying ‘I Love You‘. Kitagawa was not heavily blushing, just politely did confesses her love to Gojo.
Did Marin and Gojo get together?
Wakana Gojo was a loner who wanted to be a hina doll craftsman. His passion was something that people did not understand, especially those who are the same age as him. This gave him social trauma which ended up into a social recluse. On the other hand, Kitagawa Marin is a popular girl in school. A lot of people notice her beauty but what they don’t know is that she wanted to cosplay.
The two of them come from different worlds and are obviously contrasting to each other but one incident changed their relationship. When Marin found out that Gojo can make clothes, she did not have second thoughts about asking him to make a costume for her. He agreed and the two started getting to know each other more.
Do Gojo and Marin End Up Together in My Dress-Up Darling?
At the start of the series, Marin and Gojo were just classmates who rarely spoke to each other. But after Gojo agreed to make a costume for Marin, they would talk to each other more and spend a lot of time together. The first costume that he made for her was a success and it made their relationship better as Gojo started to open up to her. Marin supported Gojo and continued to compliment him on his work, boosting his self-confidence.
He would also take care of her whenever she was sick, help her cook, and even support her in making her decisions. His treatment of her truly evolved to the point that he was willing to teach her stuff about school. He cares about her though at first, it seemed platonic. But for Marin, she knew she was in love with Gojo by the end of volume 2 of the manga.
She would find a way to spend more time with him by going to his house whenever she was free. In chapter 39, she decided to confess to him while he was asleep. But of course, he did not hear this. Their closeness started a rumor that they might be dating but Gojo denied it as he believes that she would never date someone like him. By chapter 62, Gojo finally realizes that his feelings for Marin are the same as his feelings for the Hina dolls, clearly hinting that he loves her too.
However, the manga did not say if the two eventually got together. This is understandable as the manga is still ongoing. For now, it is clear to fans that the two have feelings for each other. One person should just be brave enough to make things official.
Does Marin Like Gojo?
Viewers watch Marin realize she is head over heels for Gojo as she witnesses his attention to detail and passion, taking note of his intellectualism and sensitivity to detail. Not only does she admire him for his knowledge and work ethic, but for the pureness of his heart.
How does My Dress-Up Darling end?
And, damn, just like that, Season 1 of My Dress-Up Darling came to an end today, with Episode 12 ending with exactly the scene I predicted it would. (Yep, I’ve read the manga)
Not to worry, though, as I have a strong feeling we will soon get an announcement for a Season 2, as this rom-com has been one of the most popular anime of the Winter 2022 season.
So, onwards and upwards, and let’s do a My Dress-Up Darling, Episode 12 review as, even if this wonderful anime has now ended, the show’s final episode was ‘almost’ satisfying overall.
Review: My Dress-Up Darling, Episode 12, “My Dress-Up Darling“
Episode 12 was one of the most relaxing episodes of the entire anime, with Marin and Gojou not doing much of anything except spending time together and having fun.
Fireworks are the name of the game this week, as it is summer vacation and Marin decides she wants to go to a local festival.
But, unfortunately for Marin, her dad won’t let her go until she finishes all her summer homework.
That leads her to message Gojou saying “Help me”, and he is soon over at Marin’s apartment helping her get through all the homework she should have done weeks before.
Eventually, the pair are watching horror movies with Gojou asking “Aren’t they scary?”, and Marin saying “No, of course not”.
Of course, by the end, Marin is terrified, while Gojou is calmly rewinding the film to see how all those cool special effects were done.
And this is what I have loved about so much of this wonderful anime, as it has often seemed as though Marin is both the strongest of the two and also the one who always leads.
In reality, however, just like in this scene, Gojou is actually far more emotionally resilient than he looks and, during some of the most important moments, really quite chill.
Marin, being the somewhat flighty person she can often be, needs someone like that to keep her grounded.
Gojou is that person every time.
The following day the pair head to school to pick up Marin’s math homework, which leads them to check out the school swimming pool as it’s such a hot afternoon.
Marin decides to poke her toe in the water but somehow manages to fall in fully clothed.
After Gojou jumps in to save her and they are both dripping wet on the side of the pool, Marin confesses she can’t swim and really thought she was a goner.
Again, when it counts, Gojou is the strong one as he has no qualms about jumping in to rescue her.
Proving, yet again, while Marin may seem to be able to take care of herself, time after time she’d be in a helluva mess if Gojou wasn’t there to save her from herself.
He also proves, that where Marin is concerned, both her safety and her happiness are his only concern. And hell, wouldn’t that make him the world’s best boyfriend, eh? And doesn’t she already know that?
The rest of the episode is made up of Marin and Gojou going to a summer festival, with Marin arriving wearing a yukata, and Gojou being so blown away by how beautiful she looks he can hardly speak.
Marin realizes Gojou has suddenly turned shy because of the way she looks, and her heart almost beats out of her chest she’s so happy.
As the fireworks start, Gojou is astounded by how beautiful they look as, always being alone before, he has never seen fireworks so close up. Until Marin catapulted into his life, that is, and he finally had someone who would go to a festival with him.
A scene that isn’t dealt with in a heavy-handed sob story way, as many writers would insist upon, but instead in a matter-of-fact way points out Gojou is happy now, rather than making us all pity him because of his past.
But, things get even better for Gojou soon after because, as he is carrying Marin home after her sandals rub sore spots on her feet, she tells him “Sorry, Gojou-Kun. Next year, I promise I’ll be more careful”.
And Gojou realizes yet again, that this isn’t just a “few months thing” between he and Marin, but that Marin is planning on them spending time together long into the future.
But… before you think My Dress-Up Darling, Episode 12 has ended on this happy note, keep watching through the sneaky ending theme song and end credits, as the most important scene of the entire anime is about to come up.
What happens when Marin calls Gojou terrified, as she has made the mistake of watching another horror movie alone. And now she can’t sleep.
So, she asks Gojou to talk to her over the phone until they both get tired.
But, as she hears Gojou’s breathing turn into the heavy breathing of sleep, she ends the story she was telling him and calmly says “Gojou-kun, I love you”.
Of course, he doesn’t hear her.
A lovely ending scene, and one that summed up the entire anime series so perfectly.
Because, right from the start, Marin was the girl who always said what she thought.
Whether it was “Please sew this dress for me”, or “Come to a cosplay event” to “You should never make fun of the things that people like” and, finally, “I love you”.
Gojou being who he currently is needed someone like that to sweetly, kindly but firmly pull him into their life, and allow him to experience all the things he wasn’t able to experience before, simply because he didn’t have any friends.
That it was Marin, the most popular girl in the school who then promptly fell in love with him because he was just as kind and lovely as she was, made it even better.
And when you get right down to it, My Dress-Up Darling has been an anime all the way through that doesn’t feature high drama, tragic events, or nasty, rude people.
Hell, it didn’t even feature an ugly word between Marin and Gojou throughout all 12 episodes. No arguments, no fights, no stalking off pissed off at the other person either.
Instead, My Dress-Up Darling just calmly followed two nice people who quietly fell in love, while enjoying spending time together and doing the things they love to do.
And, honestly, isn’t that how love should be in real life too?
My Dress-Up Darling, Episode 12, and all the other episodes are now streaming via Crunchyroll.
Meanwhile, we’ll be sure to let you know if a Season 2 is greenlit but, if I was a betting girl, I would bet the house on it.
